Jumpers like Layups!

As the Hornets – Mavericks game was heating up in the 2nd half last night, Hornets color analyst, Gil McGregor wildly gushed that Dirk Nowitzki was “Making jumpers like layups.” This sounds like one of those poorly phrased announcer pronouncements based on significance of the moment, ignoring any historical context or statistical evidence.

However, McGregor was actually right. Nowitzki was 9 of 15 or 60% on 16-23ft. jumpshots last night. That’s just a hair under the league average for shots at the rim of 62.7%. On the season Nowitzki is shooting 55% from that distance, roughly 7 percentage points lower than the average on shots at the rim and higher than the league average shooting percentage from everywhere else on the floor. Nowitzki has been “Making jumpers like layups” most of the season.

Well said Gil McGregor!
